Z408 vs Z308 Cast Iron Welding Rod
Z408 and Z308 are both used for cast iron repair, but their selection depends on the required weld-metal performance and post-weld processing.
Z408 uses a nickel-iron alloy system and is suitable for important, high-strength gray iron and ductile iron castings where deposited-metal strength and toughness are priorities. It is commonly considered for cylinders, engine seats, gears, rollers and other load-bearing cast parts.
The pure nickel Z308 welding rod is generally preferred for gray cast iron components that require better machinability after welding, including machine tool guide rails, engine blocks, pump housings, gear housings and precision machined surfaces.
Choose Z408 when higher deposited-metal strength and toughness are the main requirements. Choose Z308 when machinability, controlled cold repair and precision post-weld processing are more important.
